Is the WIMBA Stifle Orthosis Pro a replacement for surgery?
Not automatically. Surgical stabilisation remains an important and often preferred treatment pathway for many dogs with cranial cruciate ligament disease. A custom stifle brace may be considered when surgery is not appropriate, must be delayed or is declined, and it may also have a protective role within selected post-operative or rehabilitation plans. The orthosis does not repair the CrCL, recreate the native ligament or treat a meniscal lesion, so suitability must be assessed individually by the prescribing clinician.
Which dogs may be considered for a WIMBA stifle brace?
Current WIMBA indications include selected cases of cranial cruciate ligament rupture or deficiency, conservative management when surgery is not appropriate, post-operative protection and rehabilitation, stifle instability requiring controlled range of motion, and longer-term support during activity or recovery. Diagnosis alone does not confirm candidacy. Joint stability, pain, skin condition, gait, anatomy, activity level, concurrent disease and the owner’s ability to follow a monitored plan all matter.
How does the adjustable range-of-motion system work?
WIMBA Tokens are interchangeable components within the hinges that determine how much movement the orthosis allows. Depending on the prescribed token, the device can provide firmer fixed support or a controlled limit of movement. The veterinary team can select standard or custom settings and change them over time to match the patient’s biomechanics and rehabilitation goals. Tokens control motion mechanically, but they do not correct the underlying pathology.
How is a custom WIMBA Stifle Orthosis Pro made?
The WIMBA Pro pathway combines product-specific manual measurements, joint-angle assessment and WimbaSCAN data collected by a trained veterinary professional. The affected limb is scanned and the required clinical data are uploaded through WimbaAPP. WIMBA then designs and 3D prints the orthosis for that individual patient. The clinic performs the first fitting, checks alignment and gait, and teaches the owner how to apply and monitor the device.
How should a dog be introduced to the brace?
Use should begin gradually, with short, controlled sessions and regular skin and fit checks. The current WIMBA manual starts the standard acclimatisation schedule with supervised 15-minute leash walks and increases wear time progressively, but the prescribing veterinarian or rehabilitation professional may change that schedule for the individual patient. The orthosis is not intended for 24-hour use, and a dog should never be left unattended while wearing it.
What signs may indicate a fitting or tolerance problem?
The brace should remain correctly positioned during gait, without twisting, slipping, excessive tightness or hard components contacting the limb. Check the skin during and after use. If swelling, abrasion, skin damage, new pain, persistent discomfort, a marked gait change or device damage appears, remove the orthosis and contact the WIMBA Provider before continuing. Do not use it over affected skin unless the treating professional has specifically advised otherwise.
How should the orthosis be cleaned and maintained?
Hand-clean the device with lukewarm water and mild soap, using a soft cloth or sponge when needed, then allow it to air dry completely. Clean it after contact with mud, sand, salt water, chlorine, snow or other debris. Do not machine wash, tumble dry, use a hair dryer, heat the orthosis or modify its structure. Before every use, check that the brace is clean, undamaged and correctly assembled.
Does the brace replace rehabilitation or other treatment?
No. A stifle orthosis is one component of an individual veterinary treatment plan. Depending on the diagnosis, that plan may also include activity restriction, pain management, weight management, therapeutic exercise, rehabilitation and scheduled reassessment. Follow-up is important because fit, skin tolerance, gait and the required range of motion may change as the patient progresses.
What does the clinical evidence say about canine stifle braces?
The evidence is encouraging but still limited. A small retrospective study of ten dogs with unilateral CrCL insufficiency reported improved affected-limb weight bearing after custom orthotic management. However, study size and design limit how broadly the result can be applied. A brace should therefore be presented as a monitored option for selected patients, not as a guaranteed outcome or a universal substitute for surgical stabilisation.
